RAB day 0

By PaulChristie on 08 September 2012

Well, I am here at last, after 284 hours and 4019 miles of training since 1st January, I am sat here at the base camp in lands end.

Who would have thought it 2 1/2 years ago that a 19 1/2  stone overweight man would be about to start the most physical and mental challenge of his life, to cycle 970 miles from Lands End to John O'Groats!

Its been quite a journey getting here, the initial fear when I found out I had got a place, the excitement of accepting the challenge, the hard wet, windy and long solo cycles on the weekends in what has felt like the crappest year for weather ever.

There's only one reason that I have managed to get this far, and that is my wife Sarah, who kicked me out of bed at 6:30am on Sunday mornings regardless of the weather to go training, who has been the 2nd half of team Christie making me sandwiches for my rides, supporting and encouraging me when I didn't think I could do it, who looked after our kids while I was out cycling without any respite after doing it during the week, for the hot baths and coffee ready for me on my return from 7 hours in the saddle  and most importantly, for her "Kill it Christie" text messages while out on the bike!

I have had a lot of support from friends, both in messages of good luck as well as my training compadre Adam, who has not only encouraged me, cycled to and from work with me, but also has driven me to lands end today.

And so it begins!
